McGuireWoods Champions Diversity & Inclusion

McGuireWoods is committed to diversity and inclusion within our firm, the legal profession and our communities. The firm’s Diversity & Inclusion Committee is led by Baltimore partner Ava Lias-Booker.

The firm has six lawyer networks to support the success of diverse and women lawyers. Our networks include the African-American Lawyers Network, the Asian Pacific Lawyers Network, the Hispanic/Latino Lawyers Network, the LGBT Lawyers Network, the Veteran Lawyers Network and the Women Lawyers Network. The largest of these is our Women Lawyers Network. The chairs of the lawyer networks sit on the Diversity & Inclusion Committee.

McGuireWoods supports diversity and inclusion in many ways, including:

  • Internal initiatives within the firm to retain and promote diverse and women lawyers.
  • External sponsorships and memberships in organizations devoted to diversity in the legal profession.
  • Programming that supports diversity in our communities and pipeline programs encouraging students from under-represented groups to consider a career in the legal profession.
  • Recruiting diverse lawyers. The firm supports diversity recruiting through:
    • McGuireWoods Diversity Scholarship Program
    • Law Preview Scholarships
    • 1L LCLD Scholars Program
        • Charlotte Legal Diversity Clerkship Program
        • McGuireWoods / NAPABA Law Foundation Internship Program
        • A Diverse Supplier Program that promotes the hiring of diverse suppliers in seeking contracts for firm services.

Our diversity and inclusion initiatives have received numerous awards, including the NAPABA President’s Award for McGuireWoods’ support of the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association and its law foundation and internship program. In 2015, Law360 ranked our firm fifth on its inaugural list of “The 25 Best Law Firms for Black Attorneys.” We have been recognized several times as one of Working Mother magazine's “50 Best Law Firms for Women,” and Equality Illinois has repeatedly recognized McGuireWoods as one of the top law firms in Illinois to show a growing commitment to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) inclusiveness in the workplace.
