The National Law Journal quoted McGuireWoods partner Laura Colombell Marshall in a Feb. 25, 2022, story on how Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has heightened demand for lawyers with experience in sanctions, the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act and other cross-border legal services. The article also highlighted recent posts about the crisis on McGuireWoods’ Subject to Inquiry blog.
Marshall, a partner in the firm’s Government Investigations & White Collar Litigation Department, told the NLJ that she advised clients to take stock of their Russia-related business even before the United States and other allies imposed economic sanctions in response to the invasion of Ukraine. She said she recommended that businesses examine their geographic footprint and determine what financial transactions might be in play, what contracts they have and whether the sanctions have trade implications.
She added that the sanctions are a “whole new level and certainly a lot more comprehensive” than those imposed after Russia occupied Crimea in 2014.
