Natural Gas Transmission

The more than 2 million miles of natural gas transmission pipeline in the United States crisscross the country bringing energy to millions of customers. Protecting this valuable asset from exposure to third-party encroachment is a critical issue for owners, as is maintaining and ensuring the safety of an infrastructure that sometimes dates from the 1960s. Nevertheless, several recent high-profile accidents have brought the natural gas transmission industry under public, congressional and regulatory scrutiny. At the same time, rising production of shale gas in the United States has created a demand for additional pipeline infrastructure. Together these forces have led Congress and the Department of Transportation’s Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) to launch studies and evaluations that could well change the regulatory landscape for natural gas transmission.

We assist natural gas transmission clients in the following areas:

  • Asset protection
  • Corrective action orders
  • Encroachment issues
  • Personal injury claims
  • Property damage
  • Regulatory and industry investigations
  • Risk management response/planning

We stay abreast of federal and state gas and oil pipeline developments and maintain close relationships with the industry regulators, including PHMSA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). When an incident occurs, we represent our client with respect to PHMSA corrective action orders so that they can get back up and running as quickly as possible. When the NTSB elects to assert its jurisdiction over an incident, we negotiate on behalf of our client and handle any lawsuits that arise as a result of the incident.
