International Wealth Management and Tax

Based in London, the international wealth management and tax group of McGuireWoods offers high net worth clients a full range of advisory services, including cross-border income and capital gains tax planning, structuring of business interests and holding companies, and other international wealth planning strategies. We represent individuals and families resident in the United Kingdom, across Europe and around the world, whose personal assets and business interests often extend across jurisdictions.

Our private client team has been recognized by Chambers Global for the strength of our work in the UK and Sweden, and members of our tax practice have been named leading practitioners by The Legal 500 UK and Legal Experts EMEA. Group leaders include a chartered tax advisor, lawyers qualified to practice in England and Wales, Norway, Sweden and the United States, and individuals who serve as directors for a number of multinational companies. Our practitioners speak numerous languages, allowing us to communicate with clients and negotiate with governmental and taxing authorities worldwide in a clear, effective manner.

We understand that each client presents a unique combination of financial objectives and concerns, often requiring complex solutions and focused legal advice. While our counsel is tailored to meet the specific needs of each individual or family, we regularly provide guidance in a number of core areas. For example, we advise high net worth clients on laws of residence and domicile, including identification of opportunities and risks associated with the development of flexible, tax-efficient estate plans and income tax positions. We act for international families with members based in the UK, providing advice on cross-border estate planning and the implications of being deemed domiciled in the UK, including advice on the remittance basis of taxation relevant to income and capital gains.

We also advise high net worth individuals resident in the United States and in Europe, with property in a range of jurisdictions, on international coordination of estate and tax planning, asset protection and wealth structuring. Among other services, we counsel non-UK domiciled individuals on structuring their personal and business assets around the world and provide guidance on income tax matters, in order to optimise their estate planning in an international context.

Marital, generation, gift and succession planning are important points of concerns for many of our clients, particularly those that arise in a cross-border context. We advise on asset protection and marital agreements, inheritance tax issues, preparation of wills, creation of trusts and nonprofit and charitable foundations, and other strategies designed to achieve fairness and efficiency across the diverse tax regimes and laws of succession where family members are located.

We help clients ensure compliance with all relevant tax laws and respond to enquiries of local taxing agencies, including Her Majesty's Revenue & Customs in the UK and those of other European and Nordic countries. We work closely with the firm's lawyers in the United States to address tax questions involving the U.S. Internal Revenue Service and state departments of revenue, as applicable.
